Overgrown fields and pastures cut back to open ground

Brush hogging cuts back fields and pastures that have gotten out of control. Doberman Excavation and Services brings heavy-duty equipment built for tall, thick growth. It also cuts saplings and small trees up to 4 inches in diameter. Some people call it bush hogging, and it is the same job.

We cut fields across Greene County and the northern Catskills, for farms and rural landowners. Brush hogging is one part of our work as an excavation contractor in Oak Hill. When the growth is too heavy for a brush hog, the job moves to forestry mulching.

Field Mowing for Greene County Farms and Rural Land

The 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 201 farms in Greene County, at 150 acres on average. Those farms held 4,639 acres of pasture. Hay and other forage crops were the top crop, on 8,365 acres. The same count found 5,109 cattle and calves on the county's farms.

We brush hog pastures and idle fields so they stay open. A field left alone fills in with brush, then saplings. Fence lines grow in too, and we cut them back so you can reach the fence.

Hunting land needs mowing too. We mow the fields and hunting lanes you already use. Cutting new lanes or food plots out of the woods is a land clearing job.

What Can a Brush Hog Service Cut?

Our brush hogging knocks down heavy grass and weeds. It cuts through brush and light overgrowth, and it takes saplings up to 4 inches thick. The cut growth stays on the ground and breaks down there.

Thicker growth is a different job. Heavy brush on wooded ground calls for forestry mulching, which grinds it into mulch on site. Bigger trees come down with our tree and stump removal service.

We size each brush hogging job by its acreage and its growth. Grass and weeds on open, level ground go fastest. Thick brush and saplings take longer, and so do slopes. Photos of the field help us plan the work.

When to Brush Hog a Field in the Catskills

The state Department of Environmental Conservation has a plan for grassland birds like the bobolink. For fields over 25 acres on its wildlife lands, it says to avoid mowing from April 23 to August 15. That window covers the months when those birds nest. On your own land the timing is your call, and we can plan the cut around it.

Ground conditions matter too. Snow and ice melt can leave a field soft and muddy in spring. Heavy equipment can rut soft ground, so a cut may need to wait until the field firms up.

In a weedy pasture, aim to cut before the weeds go to seed. That leaves less seed on the ground for next year. Call or text (518) 281-8003, and we can set a date that fits your field.

FAQ

Brush Hogging Questions, Answered

Common questions about brush hogging around Oak Hill and the northern Catskills. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (518) 281-8003

What is the difference between brush hogging and lawn mowing?
Brush hogging is heavy-duty mowing for fields and rough ground with tall growth. It cuts thick growth and saplings a lawn mower cannot get through. A yard that needs a short, even cut is a job for a lawn mowing company instead.
How much does brush hogging cost?
The price comes from the size of the field and what grows on it. Rocky or sloped ground adds time too. We price by the acre or by the hour, and the quote comes in writing. Call or text (518) 281-8003 for a free estimate.
How often should a field be brush hogged?
It depends on what grows there and how you use the land. A pasture may need a cut when weeds start to take over. An idle field needs a cut often enough that saplings never get ahead of you. We can set the timing with you when we look at the field.
What should I do before you brush hog my field?
Tell us about anything hidden in the tall grass. Old fence wire, rocks, stumps and well caps can sit out of sight. Mark them with a flag or a stake before we start, so we can cut around them.
Can you brush hog my field if I live out of the area?
Yes. We work with owners of Catskills second homes and vacation rentals who live out of the area. We can talk through the job by phone and send before and after photos of the cut. Year-round upkeep falls under our property maintenance for second homes.
Does brush hogging help with ticks?
It can help near the house. The CDC says ticks live in grassy and brushy areas. It lists clearing tall grass and brush around homes as one way to cut down on blacklegged ticks. We can cut back the tall growth at the edges of your yard.
