Land Clearing in Oak Hill, NY

Land Clearing · Oak Hill, NY

Overgrown land cleared and put back to use

Land clearing turns neglected ground back into land you can use. Have overgrown fields, thick brush, unwanted saplings or property you can't even walk through? Doberman Excavation and Services has the heavy equipment to do the hard work. We clear lots and acreage in Oak Hill and across Greene County.

The work covers building lots and homesites, fields and pastures gone to brush, fence lines and rights-of-way, and hunting land. We clear it two ways: forestry mulching in place, or an excavator with hauling. A field that needs a cut more than a clearing is a job for brush hogging.

What We Handle

  • Lot and acreage clearing for building lots and homesites
  • Overgrown property reclamation for fields and pastures
  • Brush clearing and brush removal, thick saplings included
  • Fence line and right-of-way clearing
  • Hunting lanes and food plot clearing
  • ATV and walking trail clearing
  • Driveway and access trail clearing
  • Brush mulched on site, or stumps pulled and the debris hauled away

Lot Clearing and Brush Removal in Greene County

You may have a few acres to reclaim, or a property nobody has kept up in years. We have the equipment to clear either one. Brush removal opens up fields and pastures that have filled in with saplings. We have cleared brush and overgrowth to get a pasture ready for new goats.

On a homesite, lot clearing is the first step. We clear the spot for the house and the driveway, stumps and all. Then our site preparation work builds the pad and digs for the footings.

Fence lines and rights-of-way fill in with brush when nobody cuts them back. We clear them so the line is easy to see and reach again.

Mulcher or Excavator: Which Clearing Method Fits Your Property?

Our CAT 255 skid steer runs a CAT HM215 forestry mulcher. It turns heavy brush and saplings into mulch right on site. The mulch stays on the ground as a cover, and the roots stay in the soil.

Mulching fits fields, pastures, trails, hunting lanes and fence lines, where the goal is open, usable ground. The excavator fits a building lot or a new driveway, where the stumps have to come out. Stumps left under a pad or a driveway rot over time, and the ground above them can sink.

On an excavator job, we take the trees down and pull the stumps with their roots. Then we pile the debris and haul it away. One property can get some of each, with mulch on the back acres and stumps pulled where the house goes.

Food Plots and Hunting Lanes in the Catskills

Hunting lanes and food plots are part of our land clearing work. We cut lanes through thick brush and saplings. For a food plot, we clear the ground so it is open for planting.

Trails get the same work. We clear ATV and walking trails, plus driveway and access trails into wooded land.

Much of Greene County is glacial till over shallow bedrock or over a dense layer that water sits on. That is why hillside ground can stay wet in spring. If wet ground is a regulated wetland, clear cutting in it or within 100 feet needs a state DEC permit. The DEC's online maps are a starting point, and a jurisdictional determination from the DEC gives the final answer.

FAQ

Land Clearing Questions, Answered

Common questions about land clearing around Oak Hill and the northern Catskills. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (518) 281-8003

How much does land clearing cost?
The acreage and the thickness of the growth set most of the price. Stumps, slope, rock, wet ground and hauling move it too. Send a few photos with the location and the approximate acreage for a free estimate. Our guide to land clearing costs per acre in New York covers market ranges.
Do you remove stumps when you clear land?
Yes, when the job calls for it. The excavator pulls stumps out with their roots, and we haul them away with the debris. Our tree and stump removal work uses the same method. On a mulching job, the roots stay in the ground.
Do I need to call 811 before land clearing?
Pulling stumps counts as digging under New York's one-call rule, which names tree root removal as excavation. The excavator calls 811 two to ten working days ahead, not counting the day of the call. Utilities do not mark private lines, such as a buried line to a barn. The owner points those out before the work starts.
Do I need a permit to clear land in New York?
Rules differ by town, so start with your town's building department or code enforcement officer. Windham's zoning law requires a town permit to clear an acre or more, though agricultural activities and forest management are exempt. Durham, which takes in Oak Hill, requires a floodplain development permit to dig or fill in a mapped flood zone. A build that disturbs an acre or more of soil needs the state's stormwater permit and an erosion control plan.
Can you clear land if I live out of the area?
Yes. Send a few photos and the location, and we can talk through the job by phone. When the work is done, we can send before-and-after photos. Real estate agents with a listing that needs clearing before it goes on the market can do the same.
What areas do you serve for land clearing?
Oak Hill sits at the center of our service area, which runs about 35 miles around it. That takes in Greene County and the northern Catskills, with towns like Catskill, Cairo, Greenville, Windham and Hunter. Rensselaerville in Albany County and Saugerties in Ulster County are part of it too. Call or text (518) 281-8003 to tell us where the land is.
