Greenville is old farm country, and much of it sits on slow-draining till over shale. Fields left alone fill in with brush and saplings. Low spots stay soggy after snowmelt and hard rain. On other lots, rock sits close to the surface.

On the USDA soil map, Burdett is one of the most common soils in Greenville. It is a deep soil, with a silty top layer over shaly till. Water moves through its lower layers slowly, and the USDA rates it somewhat poorly drained.
Arnot and Tuller soils cover large parts of town too, with bedrock 10 to 20 inches down. Tuller sits in low spots on flatter hilltops and drains slowly. Slow-draining ground like Burdett and Tuller holds water after snowmelt, so yards puddle and driveways go soft.
The land drops about 450 feet from Norton Hill down to Freehold, near where Basic Creek meets Catskill Creek. FEMA maps a flood zone on the low ground along the creeks there. Fill or grading inside that zone goes through the town first. French drains and regrading give runoff a planned path away from a house or a drive.
The town's history page credits farming and the mid-1900s boarding house era for the look of many buildings in town. Most of that farming has faded. The USDA describes most Burdett land as cleared, with large acreages now in brush and reverting to woodland.
An old hayfield left alone fills in with brush and saplings. Brush hogging cuts saplings up to 4 inches thick and opens the field back up. Heavier growth calls for forestry mulching, which grinds brush and small trees into mulch on site.
About three in ten homes in town were built before 1960, per the Census Bureau. About a third went up in the 1990s and 2000s. The Census also counts more than 150 homes here kept for seasonal or occasional use. We keep up second homes and their land for owners who live out of the area.
New houses still go up in Greenville a few at a time. The Census Bureau's permit survey counted five new single-family homes in the town in 2024. Every building permit starts at the town Building Department, and the same office takes septic permit applications.
The town water system has about 260 service connections, so most homes in town sit outside it. The septic form asks for engineered plans for any new system. Its site map must show your well, plus any well or septic system within 250 feet next door. Work may not start until the permit is issued.
Once the permit is issued, we do the digging and the septic system installation to the engineer's plan. The town's fee schedule also lists demolition, so an old barn or shed coming down starts at the same office. Splitting land into new lots goes through the town Planning Board, including a public hearing.
Routes 32 and 81 are the town's main roads, and they meet in the hamlet. Many side roads follow creeks and old turnpikes, the town's history page notes. The town highway department keeps up 63 miles of town roads.
On a town road, ask the highway department about the ditch and any culvert before a new drive goes in. Our gravel driveway work covers new drives, regrading, fresh stone and culverts at the road. On slow-draining ground, a crowned drive with ditches beside it sheds water instead of holding it.
Winter brings the town plow trucks out on the roads. State law bars throwing snow onto a public road, so driveway snow stays on the lot. Snow plowing for driveways and private roads is part of our winter work here. On gravel, we plow without tearing up the stone.
