Trees taken down and stumps pulled, roots and all

Doberman Excavation and Services does tree removal and stump removal in Oak Hill and across Greene County. We take down small and medium trees with our machines, then pull each stump out with its roots. That covers hazard trees that may cause harm to your house or driveway, and trees a storm has knocked down.

The cleanup is part of the job. We haul the wood and debris away and backfill the stump holes. Brush and saplings around the trees can go through the forestry mulcher and stay on site as mulch. When the job grows to a whole lot or acreage, land clearing covers it.

How Does Stump Removal Work With an Excavator?

We dig around the stump and pull it out of the ground with its roots. That leaves a hole, and we backfill it and pack the soil down. When the yard needs reshaping after the trees come out, land grading takes it from there.

Pulling takes out the stump and its main roots together. The ground can then be graded and built on. On a building lot, the stumps come out before site preparation starts. Old stumps from past tree work come out the same way.

New York's one-call rule lists tree root removal with machines as excavation. That means a call to 811 at least two working days before the dig. The day of the call does not count. The utilities do not mark private lines, like a buried line to a barn, so tell us where they run.

Storm Cleanup and Dead Ash Trees in Greene County

Ice and heavy wet snow can bring trees down across the northern Catskills. Storm cleanup starts with the trees that block the driveway. Then we clear the rest of the fallen trees and haul the debris away.

Emerald ash borer is an insect that kills ash trees. The state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has confirmed it in every New York county except Hamilton and Lewis. Once it gets into an ash tree, most die within 2 to 4 years, the DEC says. The DEC adds that an infested ash only has to come down if it could be a hazard by falling.

Own a second home here but live out of the area? We can look at the trees for you and send photos by phone. Property maintenance for vacation homes covers the upkeep when you can't be there.

When Does a Tree Need to Come Down?

The DEC's guide to tree risk looks for two things. One is a defect that could make the tree fail. The other is a target in reach, such as a building or a road. A tree deep in the woods with nothing in reach carries little risk, the guide says.

Dead or broken branches are a warning sign, and so are cracks or splits in the bark. Mushrooms or fungus on the tree are signs of decay. A leaning trunk with raised ground at its base means the roots have most likely failed. Horizontal cracks mean the tree is already failing and should come down as soon as possible, the guide says.

Send us a few photos and your location, and tell us what sits under the tree. We can talk through the approach before any work starts. Permit questions go to your town's code office, and we point you there.

FAQ

Tree and Stump Removal Questions, Answered

Common questions about tree and stump removal around Oak Hill and the northern Catskills. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (518) 281-8003

How much does tree removal cost?
The price depends on the size of the tree and what sits near it. Machine access matters too, and so does pulling the stump and hauling the wood. Send a few photos and the location, and we follow up with a free estimate. Call or text (518) 281-8003.
Do you grind stumps?
We pull stumps out with their roots, using the excavator. Stump grinding is a different method, and a stump grinding company quotes that work. Pulling leaves a hole, and we backfill it as part of the job.
Do you trim or prune trees?
No. Tree trimming and tree pruning are work for a tree service or an arborist. We take whole trees down with our machines and pull the stumps.
Can you take down a tree that leans toward the house?
Yes, when the excavator can reach the tree and bring it down away from the house. A tall tree over the roof with no room to fall may need a climber or a crane. That is a job for a tree service, and we tell you so up front.
What if a storm drops a tree on a power line?
Stay clear and treat the line as live. Call the power company first and let them make it safe. Then call or text (518) 281-8003, and we clear the tree and haul the debris away.
Can I take the wood home for firewood?
Only if home is within 50 miles. The DEC says untreated firewood may not travel farther than that from where it was cut. Moving it also takes a self-issued certificate of origin, a form on the DEC site. Wood you do not keep gets hauled away with the rest of the debris.
