Some old barns and garages lean past the point of repair. A roof sags under snow, or the sills rot out from under the walls. When a structure is past saving, we take it down by machine and haul the debris away.
Sheds and small outbuildings come down the same way. If brush and saplings have grown up around a building, land clearing opens that ground back up first. Our demolition services cover Greene County, from river towns like Athens up to mountaintop towns like Windham.
Real estate agents and property managers can bring us in too. If an old shed has to go before a listing goes up, we take it down and clean up.
When a barn or garage comes down, the slab or foundation under it can come out too. We break up the concrete and haul it away with the rest of the debris. Old stone and block foundation walls come out the same way.
With the concrete out, land grading fills the low spot and shapes the ground so water runs off. If a new garage or home is going in, site preparation for the next build picks up from there.
Plan on one, and ask the town building department before anything comes down. The Town of Catskill requires a permit for the demolition of any structure. Durham, which takes in Oak Hill, lists demolition as permit work, and so do Cairo, Greenville and Coxsackie.
Each town's form asks its own questions. Windham's demolition application goes in at least two weeks before the start, and the permit must be issued first. Catskill's form asks the year the building went up and where the debris will go.
In Hunter, the town's form says buildings put up before 1974 need an asbestos survey before demolition. That comes from the state's asbestos rule, Industrial Code Rule 56. The state names roofing shingles, siding shingles, floor tile and pipe insulation among materials that might contain asbestos. If the survey finds asbestos the work would disturb, an asbestos abatement contractor removes it before demolition starts.
