Catskill gives an excavation contractor two different problems. Near the village and the Hudson, the USDA soil survey maps clay left by an old glacial lake. In spring, the water table in that clay can rise within 1 to 2 feet of the surface. Across much of the rest of the town, bedrock sits less than 20 inches down.
Doberman Excavation and Services works across the town of Catskill as part of our Greene County service area. In the village and out in the hamlets, we handle site preparation for new homes and garages. Call or text (518) 281-8003 with the location and a few photos. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing.

The village sits where Catskill Creek meets the Hudson, and it is the Greene County seat. Census estimates show about 6 in 10 village homes were built before 1940. Across the whole town, the share is about 4 in 10, and the median home dates to 1953.
Some older properties carry a barn or garage that is past saving. Outside the village, the town requires a demolition permit for any structure. Its demolition form also asks whether an asbestos survey is required. We take on barn and garage demolition, then haul the debris and grade the spot.
New houses keep going up outside the village. Census Bureau permit counts show the town issued permits for 22 new single-family homes in 2025 and 26 in 2024. The village issued none in those years. A new house starts with a cleared lot and a level pad.
Near the village, the old lake clay is slow to drain. Spring rain and snowmelt can sit near the top while the water table rises close to the surface. That can mean standing water in the yard and ruts in a gravel driveway.
Grading that tips water away from the house is often the first fix. Where water still collects, French drains carry it to a ditch or a lower spot. We look at where the water can go before we dig.
The hills bring a different problem. About a third of the town's land slopes 15 percent or more, and bedrock often sits close to the surface. That shapes where a pad or a driveway can go.
Catskill has two code offices. Inside the village, the Village of Catskill Code Enforcement and Planning office handles permits. In the rest of the town, the Town of Catskill Code Enforcement office does.
Outside the village, a new or replacement septic system needs a town septic permit. The application calls for two sets of design plans from a professional engineer. The form says review usually takes two to four weeks, and no work starts before the permit is issued.
Inside a town sewer district, the house connects to the sewer under a separate permit instead. A permitted system has to pass a final inspection before it goes into use. We handle the excavation for septic system installation and build the system to the engineer's plan.
The Census estimates about 500 homes in the town are held for seasonal or occasional use. That is roughly 8 percent of the town's housing. For owners who live out of the area, we offer property maintenance with photos sent by phone.
After a storm, we clear fallen trees and fix washouts on the drive. In winter, we plow snow. When a job is done, we send before-and-after photos.
On bigger parcels in the hills and hamlets, we take on land clearing and brush hogging. That turns overgrown ground back into usable space.
